Getting a job as a legal assistant without law firm experience is almost impossible, IF the firm has you doing complex duties/duties of a paralegal. Legal assistant jobs can vary, depending on the firm. Sometimes, they can be clerical jobs, but often, they require experience and specific skills. In general, you will need to start out as a file clerk, or in another entry-level job. You can get an internship if it is part of a college program. I am in a paralegal program now, and it ends with an internship. That is the only way I know of becoming an intern. I have a BA in a liberal arts field and I am currently trying to find an entry-level job, so I can start building up my law firm experience. I am having a difficult time, even with a high GPA, multiple honors and high-level office experience. I am hoping that once I get more classes completed, I will be able to find something.
