What does a good philosophy paper look like?
This is a hard question to answer because good papers can come in a variety of formats and approaches. What I look for in a paper is a clear thesis, good organization, an interesting and well thought out argument with good support and evidence as well as an understanding of the text and consideration of counter-arguments and answers to them in defense of your view. In short, I look for the four steps of the writing process backed up with good evidence, examples, ideas and illustrations. Aside from that there are few hard and fast rules that apply to every good paper. One thing all good papers have in common is clarity; a good paper makes it easy to understand what the author is trying to say and why. I may not always agree with the arguments presented, but a good paper makes me think about my own ideas and makes it hard to disagree.
