Fungal infections can occur when the area around the nipple is always wet. You can also get an infection if the baby has a thrush infection in his/her mouth. I am not sure if what you noticed is a fungal infection, but you should consult your doctor and have the baby examined, too. If it is a fungal infection you may have to stop breastfeeding the baby until it clears. Also they would have to give you some meds, so it is important that you see your doctor as soon as possible.
