What does a Forensic Psychologist do in Criminal Court?
Psychological profiles of the criminal defendant will significantly impact the fact finder’s decision by informing the fact finder of the mitigating or extenuating circumstances. A forensic psychologist will educate the court about the psychopathological factors or behavior patterns relevant to the offense alleged. A forensic psychologist will evaluate intellectual and emotional capacity and sentencing, and recommend the extent and effectiveness of treatment. In addition to the roles of evaluator and expert, a forensic psychologist can also act as confidential consultant to the attorney by providing valuable information for the preparation of pre-sentencing reports and in preparing for the arguments of the defense or the prosecution.
