What does a family counselor and marriage therapist do?
Certified marriage and family therapists apply family theory to individuals, families, and couples in order to resolve emotional conflicts. In doing so, they modify people’s perceptions and behaviors, enhance communication, and promote understanding among family members. Marriage and family therapy training prepares therapists to engage in psychotherapy of a non-medical nature, make appropriate referrals to psychiatric resources, perform research, and teach courses about human development and interpersonal relationships.
