What does a childminder do?
A Registered Childminder works from their own home to provide child care for children. If anyone provides care for more than 2 hours a day for reward, either money or in kind then by law they must be registered with OFSTED (Office For Standards In Education- although from April 2007 they will be known as the Office for Standards in Education, Childrens Services and Skills, and still be known as Ofsted). A childminder is usually registered to look after up to three children under 5, of these no more than one child may be under the age of 1, and three children aged 5 to 8. A childminders own children who are under the age of 8 will be deducted from their numbers on their registration certificate. They may also look after older children up to the age of 14 as long as they dont exceed the total number of children they are insured to look after and as long as it doesnt adversely affect the care of the younger children. Childminders are very flexible in the type of care they can provide. The
