What does a chemical engineer do after university?
Refinery is a very diverse and complicated industry. There are many departments for a chemical engineer: Operations-To run the plant and ‘control’ the plant to its designed variables Oil Movement: Hydrocarbons are being transferred to and from the refinery. There are chemical engineers responsible for this part as well. Technical: Troubleshooting of problems, suggestions for further improvement, calculations and simulations as well. A chemical engineer doesn’t fix the equipment-a mechanical engineer supervises and a technician does it.
The question is actually more general. Unless the size of the company is very small and the single engineer is expected to do everything, it is normally a technician who fixes things. The role of the engineer is to plan and design for new developments. This may include analysis of how well they perform and also the quantities of parts or materials needed and the associated costs. He/she may also supervise their construction to a limited degree, along with other inspectors and later be responsible for planned maintenance and repair procedures without doing the actual work of repair etc.
