What does a Basset Hound look like?
Basset Hounds are easily identified by some unmistakable characteristics. Bassets will grow to around 14 inches at the shoudlers; have long ears and abundance of loose skin. The loose skin is said to help the hound capture and keep a scent with them while tracking. They have short legs to aid in navigating rough terrain. But, they are not small dogs; the male should weigh approximately 50 – 60 lbs. While females weigh in around 40 – 50 lbs. The bone structure of a Basset is heavier than any other breed of dog, size considered. The paws appear to be huge in comparison with other breeds. The feet are webbed but, don’t let this fool you, they are not good swimmers. A Basset can swim for brief periods. If you own a pool it would be wise to fence it in.
