Making The Shining is a kind of miracle, in that it is an intimate, almost fly-on-the-wall portrait of the famously ‘publicity shy’ director at work, certainly more revealing than most portraits of directors at work this reviewer has seen. On first viewing, it seems slight and even quite slap-dash; the lack of any guiding narration, for instance, contributes to a sense of disorientation, giving the impression that what we are watching is nothing more than a series of unconnected incidents.
