What do you think of the role that women’s organisations have played in influencing society?
Women’s organisations have so far played a major role in events in Morocco. Of course, I’m not going to claim that women’s organisations deserve all the credit, since it also goes to human rights organisations, the political parties, the unions and a group of other actors. And there’s also the political will of the country’s king, without whom I don’t think it would have been possible to pass the Family Law in its current form. We have to be objective and acknowledge this fact, i.e. that the political will is in line with the will of civil society and the NGOs. Today NGOs play a variety of roles, including advocacy, lobbying, etc. However, they also provide a range of services to many women. I regard these services as extremely important, but the state must support their work. It cannot reasonably be expected for NGOs to shoulder the entire burden and for us to occasionally give them funding.
