I think they are a bad choice. They have too much recoil, too much muzzle blast, too much penetration, and are too destructive to use inside your house. I would recommend lighter standard loads, and smaller buckshot. Number 1 buckshot is supposed to be about optimum for man-size targets. I have a theory that number 4 buckshot would be very effective at indoor ranges, and entail less risk of over penetration. Federal produces buckshot loads designed for home defence.
