What do you think about the New Deal programs of F. Roosevelt?
Without many of those programs, we would be like Nigeria, the extremely wealthy telling the government how to act, while the extreme poor have to have their children working in sweat shops so their families can eat. Many of his progrms actually are why American businesses sell the kind of volume that they do. Without many of them, farmers wouldn’t be making enough, and many other businesses woudn’t have to employ the amount of people that they do. Reagrdless of the fact they create more taxes, they also create cash flow, which is what an economy depends on. Reagan sold us bad policies with pretty words, and we all are paying for it now.
I think they were good overall. First, they put the nation back on the right track. We all believe capitalism is the best system, but sometimes it gets out of control. That had happened in the 20s and it’s happening again now. People forgot that the purpose of capitalism is to provide the most good for the biggest number of people, not to concentrate wealth and make a few people ultra rich at the expense of everyone else. Roosevelt pushed through reforms that protect working people, consumers, small investors, etc. Secondly, under-regulated capitalism in the 20s had caused a depression. I understand Herbert Hoover called it a ‘depression’ because it sounded better at the time than ‘recession’. In any case, conservatives at the time thought that people should just pull up their socks and work harder and we’d get through it. Roosevelt saw it as the government’s job to help people who had lost their jobs, their homes, their futures. He put people to work building things that we need, many
