What do you say to teachers and parents who believe that students should behave appropriately out of a sense of responsibility to do the right thing and should not have to be rewarded?
A basic characteristic of behaviorally disordered students is that they are not governed by a set of internalized rules or values (moral, legal, or social). Many show no remorse because of their misbehavior. To appeal to a sense of morality or a special relationship is not an effective way to manage or teach these students. We say these students are contingency governed rather than rule governed. They need to know What will happen if I Good programs have contingencies built in for appropriate as well as inappropriate behavior.
