Kitchen designers specialize in planning commercial or residential kitchens. They also talk to clients about colors, lighting, appliances and other things to use in their designs. A high school diploma and education in interior or kitchen design is needed for this career choice. Kitchen designers also need skills in areas such as planning, organization, product knowledge and working with a client’s budget. Education Kitchen designers need education such as a high school diploma and usually a bachelors degree. Many colleges, universities or design schools have programs in kitchen and bath design. Some companies require work experience along with a degree. After a four-year degree program, there’s often an apprenticeship program. Another way to get work experience in kitchen design is through the Interior Design Experience Program.
