What Do You Know About Aung San Suu Kyi?
Aung San Suu Kyi, Daw, born in 1945, is a Myanmar leader and Nobel laureate. She is a human rights activist and has struggled for the restoration of democracy in Myanmar all her life. Suu Kyi completed her education in India and England and also attended the University of Oxford. Her mother was a well-known diplomat while her father, U Aung San, is regarded as the founder of modern Myanmar. Suu Kyi’s writings advocated the principles of nonviolence practiced by Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi. After spending most of her life abroad, Suu Kyi returned to Myanmar in 1988. She stood up against military rule and founded the National League for Democracy (NLD). Her non-violent strategy of peaceful rallies helped defuse the military’s attempts to obstruct free elections. In July 1989, the military government put her under house arrest for staging mass gatherings. Nevertheless, Suu Kyi led NLD to a sweeping victory in May 1990 but the military government refused to convene the elected parliament
