What do volunteer firefighters do?
Volunteer firefighters take the same reqirements to become certified as do paid professsional firefighters. There is no glory. Volunteers with years of experience feel an overriding sense of duty and responsibility. They find time to train. add to their skills and continue with their fundraising and maintain their equipment and station. Some are overwhelmed with trying to keep their department funded by grants or corporate sponsorship. Many do not receive any tax based support. They operate on little donations. This is an area that is little known. The public believes they receive support from their towns. yes but very little. It is a neverending struggle and many disappear or are absorbed. There is no recognition. Those seeking glory are quickly disillusioned. Those that continue for years understand the reality.
