What do VFR and IFR mean?
VFR (or Visual Flight Rules) means we are restricted to flying in conditions that allow visible references such as the ground. The weather minimums for air ambulance VFR operations are defined in Federal Aviation Regulations. LifeFlight’s internal weather minimums are far stricter than those set by the FAA. Under IFR (or Instrument Flight Rules) we are permitted to fly strictly on instruments. As of 2005, LifeFlight took advantage of the advanced avionics and performance capabilities of the new aircraft and made the transition to Instrument Flight Rules. This upgrade to IFR is consistent with the recommendations to improve safety by both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board for all EMS helicopter operations. IFR operations also allow LifeFlight pilots to take off in a wider range of visibility conditions without jeopardizing safety.
