What do think of the fact that Microsoft is now offering free anti-virus software?
Microsoft is not a non-profit organization. It is not philanthropic in nature. It is not even a “social enterprise,” with some kind of social mission to accomplish. It is, plain and simple, an old-fashioned corporation focused strictly on how it can make money. Its concern for its customers extends only as far as needed to make them happy so they’ll pay through the nose for more Microsoft products. So I tend to take a skeptical view of its motives in providing free software of any kind. Some believe it provided IE for free to take down Netscape because it wanted to own the internet, and it didn’t want the competition. It was making money from other sources in those days, so it provided IE for free, and Netscape, dependent too heavily on browser revenue, mostly disappeared. Anyway, that’s the theory.
