I think NASA knew it all the time, but didn’t want to alarm the public. I think the boy was brave to come forth with his own figures rather than go along with what the big boys were saying. I’m glad he stood by his convictions. NASA wasn’t about to tell him he was wrong because the calculations were too easy to check. You can’t tell me NASA didn’t know the truth, but just didn’t want to reveal it.
