What do they mean when they say a plant needs good light as compared to direct sunlight?

If you want good light but no direct sun put your plant on a windowsill facing North. This is ideal for eg peace lilly, cyclamen, African violet and ferns among others. West or East facing might be OK as they would only get the weaker sunshine. But avoid south facing. Other plants eg cacti will revel in a south window and would do poorly on a North one.
