What do the titles of GAEs books allude to?
WHEN GRAVITY FAILS is derived from lyrics to a Bob Dylan song (“Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues”), as is “A FIRE IN THE SUN” (“It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue”) . The title to THE EXILE KISS was apparently inspired by the quotation from Shakespeare’s “Coriolanus” quoted in the epigraph in the front of the book (“O! A kiss/ Long as my exile, sweet as my revenge,” Act 5, Scene 3). THOSE GENTLE VOICES would appear to refer to a Moody Blues song, “Tuesday Afternoon.” DEATH IN FLORENCE plays off the title of the famous Thomas Mann novel, DEATH IN VENICE.
