What do the selection heats consist of?

Each heat is run by 7-8 horses and the goal is to examine the condition of the horses that are trying out for the Palio (usually 20-30) and their suitability to the Piazza del Campo course. The heats are not therefore real races. They are held, generally, between 9 AM and 11 AM and afterwards the Captains of the Contradas that are participating to the Palio choose the 10 horses that will run in the race.
