What do the screening results mean?
There are two different possible results of the hearing screening: PASS – this means your baby is hearing well today REFER – this means the screener was unable to get a clear result A baby sleeps during AABR screening What does a “pass” result mean? This means your baby is hearing well today. Passing hearing screening means your baby is unlikely to have significant hearing loss. However, children can develop a hearing loss later in childhood, so it is important to have your child’s hearing checked if you have any concerns about hearing or speech and language development. Is my baby at risk for hearing loss later in childhood? At the time of screening, babies are also checked for factors which may put them at risk for later childhood hearing loss. If your baby has one of the following risk factors, follow-up testing will be recommended: • immediate family member with permanent childhood hearing loss cleft palate • certain syndromes, such as Pendred, Branchio-Oto-Renal, Alport, Usher, LV
