Chicago police geared up to provide extra security at Fenger High School on Monday as they reviewed a graphic amateur video showing a student beaten to death with wooden two-by-fours. The nearly three-minute video, shot by a girl who attends Fenger, captured the gruesome melee as it unfolded. Derrion Albert, 16, is seen being struck then stumbling to the ground; teenagers then continued to viciously punch, kick and strike him with the wooden boards. The additional evidence is aiding the investigation, Chicago police said. Derrion’s family was squeamish about watching the footage and not all of them were able to make it through. But they said they don’t have a problem with people viewing it as long as it helps identify who beat Derrion to death. “It hurt to watch,” said LaTonia Williams, Derrion’s aunt. “It’s one thing to hear about it and come up with your own theory of what happened. To see it is another thing. It gave us a real clear picture of what happened. That video was crucial.”

CHICAGO (CBS/STNG) ― A 16-year-old boy was beaten to death in less than four minutes by a mob of kids in the Roseland neighborhood. Derrion Albert’s family believes he may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time and they said he’d never been in a fight before in his life. About 3 p.m., police responded to a large group of people fighting in the 300 block of West 111th Street and found a male punched, kicked and struck about the body, according to police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti. Derrion Albert, 16, of the 12100 block of S. Normal Ave., was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and pronounced dead at 6:17 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. The death was ruled a homicide caused by brain injuries and blunt head trauma from an assault, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said. Albert’s family struggled Friday to understand how their honor roll student’s life could have ended in such violence. “Derrion has never been in a fig

Chicago police are still investigating the gang fight that erupted Thursday in Roseland that resulted in the death of 16-year-old Fenger High School student Derrion Albert. Albert was killed in a melee near the school that police believe is a continuation of ongoing tensions between Fenger students that are members of rival gangs. An amateur video of the brawl shows dozens of people punching, kicking and swinging wooden boards in the street. Albert was struck by blows from one of those boards, Fox Chicago reports, and the video obtained by Fox shows a person getting hit with a board and then stomped on after falling to the ground.
