What do the numbers on the air caps mean?
There is a direct correlation between the air cap number and the air cap size. The smaller the number the smaller the air cap atomizing holes. Another way to look at is to use the smaller air caps on thinner materials and use the larger air caps on thicker materials. Also, the smaller the air cap the finer the atomization, but be careful you can over atomize by using an air cap that is too small. For example, a #5 air cap is great for stains, light lacquers, and automotive base coats. A #10 air cap is great for enamels, urethanes, and latex coatings. Using a #5 air cap for a latex paint will not give you the finish you are looking for from our guns. Tech service can give you specific recommendations on air cap sizes.
