What do the muscles of the face attach to?
Most muscles of the face attach to the skull or to the jaw (mandible). A few small muscles attach to the hyoid bone, a floating bone in the neck near the windpipe. Then there’s an odd muscle below the jaw called the platysma, that has multiple insertions into the deep layers of the skin of the upper chest. The muscles of the forehead and those in back of the skull attach to a layer of tissue that fits over the skull like a helmet. The tissue layer is called Galea = Latin for helmet.
