What do the ministrys statistics show about the incidence of school bullying and gangsterism in schools today compared with previous years?
Is there cause for concern? Is bullying closely connected with the presence of gangs?: Hishammuddin: Current statistics show that the trend has been decreasing. Last year, four months after we introduced the hotline on indiscipline, we received 249 reports on indiscipline cases. This year, for the past seven months, we have received only 40 reports on indiscipline – 25 of which were brought to light by the media. So far, we have investigated and acted on 38 complaints. Another two are still under police investigation. The overall incidence of indiscipline in our schools has been going down over the last three years. It is now around 2%. We identified 1,600 pupils as having been involved in bullying last year. This is about 0.03% of our enrolment [of five million students]; a very small proportion.
