What do the leading initials M S prefacing the name of a cruise ship mean?

There are lots of initials that can precede a name on a ship. MS = motor ship, as in the ship is powered by a motor. That seems kind of obvious until you see all of the other possible initials at the website below. SS = Steam Ship, MT = Motor Tanker, and so on. Then there are the famous ones like HMS = His Majestey’s Ship, and USS = United States Ship. This got me thinking about the USS Enterprise on Star Trek (not the US Navy). Did USS stand for United Star Ship? Something else? Sorry. My mind wandered where no man has gone before. Sources: http://en.wikipedia.
