What do the government/ industry experts recommend as the best agricultural practice today?
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), it recommends the concept of integrated nutrient management (INM). INM aims to increase the efficiency of use of all nutrient sources, be they soil resources, mineral fertilizers, organic manures, recyclable wastes or biofertilizers. Organic sources and recycling do not on their own suffice to meet increased demands for food on a fixed land area. On the other hand, because of possible environmental concerns and economic constraints, crop nutrient requirements often cannot be met solely through mineral fertilizers. Hence, a judicious combination of mineral fertilizers with organic and biological sources of nutrients is being promoted. Such integrated applications are not only complementary but also synergistic as organic inputs have beneficial effects beyond their nutrient content.
