What do the following expressions mean?
“To grill somebody” is to ask a lot of rapid-fire questions, trying to break them into confessing or telling the truth. “It is stamped on your forehead” doesn’t literally mean that it’s on your forehead. It’s kind of a joke meaning “it’s so obvious it may as well be stamped on your forehead.” “You know it, so cough it up” means “you know that answer, so go ahead and tell it!” “Give your career a rest” means “stop being (whatever your career is) for a while.” (Example: If someone is a lawyer, and they can’t stop giving lawyerly advice, someone might tell them to “give your career a rest”, meaning “stop acting or talking like a lawyer all the time!” “A black eye” is figurative language. It doesn’t literally mean having a black eye. It means that someone has made that person look bad.
