What do the different ranks mean?
The RAF works together as a team. Airmen/airwomen work hands-on as specialists in support roles; non-commissioned aircrew undertake various flying roles; and officers manage teams and tasks. Within each of these categories, different ranks reflect both experience and capability. Promotion to higher rank is sometimes time-based but more usually dependent on an individual’s performance and ability to take on more responsibility. Click here for more on ranks.
