What Do the Colors Mean in Mood Rings?
Mood rings have been charting people’s moods since the 1970s; however, they are classified as pseudo-science and should be worn and interpreted only for fun. The color changes are caused by liquid crystals. The crystals are extremely sensitive to heat and will change according to the amount of heat detected. As we become happier, our capillaries move closer to the surface of our skin, resulting in more warmth. It’s similar to the effect of blushing. The opposite effect is also true: As we become nervous or unhappy, our bodies cool down and can even become clammy. The liquid crystals in mood rings can detect a difference in body temperature and change color. The purpose of mood rings is not to accurately predict mood but to make the wearer more observant of his or her fluctuating feelings.
