What do Thai ladies expect from a western husband?
There is a fixed idea that all westerners are rich, with no concept of a limit to their wealth. Status is regarded as the most important aspect in Thai society, with a need to ‘show’. When marrying a westerner, a Thai lady is elevated to the highest level of social standing and is expected to show the fact. Given these views and social pressures, it is not unreasonable for a new wife to expect a completely new lifestyle to suit her new-found, ‘limitless’ wealth. Obviously this becomes one of the first ‘negotiations’ that a prospective husband needs to have. Aside from financial standing, obviously personal choice is a factor, however the general Thai attitude is to keep life simple, so if they like the look of you (the fact that you are ‘rich’ has a big influence on this), a commitment is made.
