Researchers at N.C. State University’s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology are studying the fish coming off the scale at the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in Morehead City, N.C., this week. “Marlin is not something we get to study very often,” researcher Paul Rudershausen said. “They’re not landed at many ports along the U.S. coast.” The researchers study the dietary habits of marlin and other fish caught at the tournament. Their findings may have an impact on North Carolina’s fishing policies. “We want to see if there are consistencies in dietary contents of these major, highly migratory predators between the decades to see if overfishing is having an impact on the ecosystem,” Rudershausen said. Researchers remove the fish’s stomach and take it to the lab to study the contents.
