What do Protestants belive in?
The protestant reformation started with Martin Luther, when he became angry with the priests for selling indulgences to the common folk to ‘get out of purgatory’. He began reading the scripture and found out that salvation was by faith alone, so he posted a sign on the door of the cathedral protesting some of the Catholic beliefs. It got him in a lot of trouble with the Catholic church, but he opened a door of debate among the common folks, who were not allowed to question the word of the pope or the catholic authorities. Those who agreed with Martin Luther stayed with him and followed his teachings, even though it was not Luther’s idea to start a reformation. He wasn’t really anti-Catholic; he just wanted them to follow what the scripture said. But because the Catholic church did not want to relinquish their authority over the common folk, they would not listen to Luther’s objections.
