What do prostitutes prefer to be called?
Personally, I HATE the term “hooker” – it conjures up sitcom stereotypes and crack whores. “Sex worker” is one term, but it also refers to strippers and phone sex operators. “Pro” is generally accepted, also “working girl”, which is an older label. I’ve reclaimed the word “whore” (in the tradition of “nigger” and “fag”) but if YOU call me that I’ll take offense. What about diseases? Neither I nor anyone I know has contracted a sexually transmitted disease (STD) through work, including a woman who’s been in the life for over ten years. Accidents – broken condoms – do happen, but very rarely if you know what you’re doing (lots o’ lube). Many pros, including me, have a zero-body-fluid rule. The only thing I ever get on me is sweat, which I scrub off ASAP. But then, this happened. I remain free of HIV and every other STD there’s a test for, but it demonstrates that scares do exist, and they can bring unexpected twists. Doesn’t it ruin your personal sex life? Yes and no.
