There are attention whore that self harm but most of them hide it, from my experience i can tell you at first it’s because of depression or anger or embarrassment or guilt or nerves or anxiety etc, after awhile of doing it you don’t even need a reason you get addicted and may just do it because you haven’t in awhile, that’s one thing that makes recovery so hard, even if you got to be super happy you may still want to do it after you haven’t in awhile.

It is a form of release, normally from distressing pent up emotions, if you self harm or know of anybody who does I would suggest that you take a ice cube a squeeze it in your hand, it has the same effect of self infliction of paid with out the danges of excesive bleeding or infection.
