What do pearl quality ratings of A, AA, and AAA mean?
Grading pearls is not easy considering how many different aspect there are to compare. The seven criteria above are all taken into consideration. For example, a large size, beautiful luster and a perfect symmetrical shape can make up for small flaws and blemishes. For South Sea pearls and Tahitian pearls the A-AA-AAA system is widely accepted. AAA: The top-quality pearl. The surface will have a very high luster and be virtually flawless. AA: The surface will have a high luster, the surface can have small blemishes and the pearl might not be perfectly symmetric. A: This is the lowest jewelry-grade pearl, with a lower luster and/or more than 25% of the surface showing defects. When a pearl of “A” quality is affixed to a piece of jewelry, for example an earring or a pendant, it can be mounted so that the flaws are hidden thus providing a great looking piece of jewelry at a lower price.
