P stands for “plug” and in general (although not always) refers to the male connector. In a vertical card arrangement for a CompactPCI type backplane, the male connectors on the backplane and the lower connector is called P1, the next higher P2, and so on. In a vertical card arrangement for a VME type backplane, the male connectors are on the plug-in cards and the upper connector is called J1, the next lower J2, and so forth.
