Tim Deppen had that rarest of occurrences this week. He got to talk with someone in the Unemployment Insurance Office. Based on the calls and e-mails I’ve been receiving from out-of-work Arizonans, Deppen’s contact rates on the miracle scale somewhere between the Virgin Mary appearing on a tortilla and Immaculate Conception. It just doesn’t happen that often. Ten days ago, I wrote about the state of desperation in this state. The laid-off workers who can’t seem to penetrate the dense layer of ineptitude, incompetence or whatever it is that they layer on over there at the Department of Economic Security. A hundred or more people, some of them flat running of funds, have since called me to ask what it’ll take to get the money they’re owed through the insurance plan we all pay for. The head bureaucrats over at DES have assured me that they’re adding staff and improving the computer system.
