What do NTSC/PAL/SECAM refer to?

For the gamer’s purposes, it is necessary to note that games are typically found in either NTSC or PAL format. These games can only be played properly on a television AND game console that utilizes the same broadcast standard (i.e. you need an NTSC television and NTSC Master System console to play an NTSC Master System game).
