NFL stands for National Football League. The league was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association. The league’s name was changed to the National Football League in 1922. Of the 11 original teams only two still remain: The Decatur Staleys/Chicago Bears, and the Chicago/St. Louis/Arizona Cardinals.
