What do Mr Data and the Suffragettes have in common?
As some of you may know, I am heading to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow to run a “British Council robot workshop” The British Council are also running events based on the “Cafe Scientifique”:http://www.cafescientifique.org idea, and have asked me to run one while I am out in Malaysia. After some discussion, we chose the title “I think, therefore I robot” which will discuss whether we should make ‘intelligent slaves’ and will they ever want the vote. After Prof Andrew Ware’s inspirational inaugural lecture on Tuesday, entitled “Learning from Data” (the Data in question being the android from ‘Star Trek’), I am rather looking forward to this. If any of you have suggestions, please comment. I thought I would start with the wonderful Old Glory Insurance Robot Policy video (There is a transcript here for hard of hearing, etc as the sound is not always perfect.) If you watch it, you will see why it is so wonderful for starting the debate about robot rights and whether we should build thinking machine
