What do Jews believe happens after death?
Orthodox Jews believe in the concept of “Gan Eden” (Paradise) to which souls are admitted, though there may be up to 12 months of purging or purifying prior to their admitance, during which time family members recite Kaddish on their behalf. It’s only 11 months for most people, according to these beliefs. It is interesting to note that there are Kabalistic Jews and members of the Hassidic community who actually believe in reincarnation, though this is seldom discussed outside their circles. Conservative Jews believe something very similar, but place less emphasis upon the afterlife. Messianic Jews believe in a Paradise for souls, but also in a final resurrection, at which time the righteous will be given glorified bodies and enter a new heaven and new earth. Many Reform Jews do not believe in an afterlife at all, and it is a remarkably de-emphasized concept in their circles, but those who DO hold to beliefs similar to those of the Conservative branch.
