What do Indonesians think of President Obama?
On one side, of course, we are happy, because the one that stayed in Indonesia and went to our school became the president of America. But on the other side, everybody asks, “What are your expectations?” Of course, there are some expectations, but all the things depend on how we present ourselves. It depends on us. Do you expect Indonesia to get more attention from Obama’s government? Of course, because Indonesia has the biggest Muslim population of any country in the world. Eighty-five percent of our population, of 220 million, is Muslim. If people want to learn about the Muslims, Indonesia is the place because we have Muslims, we have Christians, we have Hindu, we have Buddhist and we have Confucians. And all of us live side by side in harmony. Our Muslims are very moderate and we are very multi: multireligion, multiculture, multiethic.
