What do I need to know about money, ATMs and credit cards in Moshi?
The national currency is the Tanzanian Schilling – TSH for short. Exchange Bureaus are plentiful and there is one at the airport. Arriving with TSH is not neccesary especially if you have some US dollars, which is by far the most useful foreigncurrency. Euros and pounds may be accepted at some places but generally at not as good of an exchange rate. The exchange rate for traveler cheques tends to be very poor in comparison to the exchange rate of cash.There are many banks in Moshi which all have ATM\’s. All cash machines take VISA cards, and there are at least two which take Mastercard. The acceptance of credit cards as payment in gift shops is becoming more common. Other types of shops and restaurants do not accept credit cards. There is a Western Union branch in Moshi which comes in handy in emergencies.
