What do I do if the installation appears to be stuck in a loop or hung, detecting hardware?

A. Don’t panic, this is fixable one way or another. The usual symptom here is that the machine will install quite happily up to the point where Windows detects the hardware present in the machine. It then either hangs (no disk activity and no progress for several hours) or abruptly reboots, restarts the setup, redetects the hardware, reboots again, and the cycle continues. The causes (and possible fixes) for this particular problem are many and varied. This is probably not a complete list of what can cause this problem, but is a list of the known solutions thus far. They are not in any particular order.
