What Do Hornets Eat?
Hornets are predaceous and feed primarily on other insects. Controlled populations of hornets can assist in pest control, though a nest located near or inside a home can prove extremely dangerous to humans. Hornets may also consume fruit, sap and other organic matter. Giant hornets are not scavengers and consume only other insects. The Asian giant hornet feeds primarily upon bees and can eliminate an entire colony in a number of hours. Honeybee larvae are also used as a food source for the giant hornet’s young. For these reasons, hornets are particularly problematic in beekeeping communities.
