What do Hampton citizens want for Fort Monroe?
A. They feel the same way as other Virginians, perhaps even more so given their proximity to this national treasure. One recent piece of evidence for this is an initiative petition, signed by more than 2300 Hampton citizens in November 2008, seeking to establish as Hampton policy that Fort Monroes reuse should be guided by its historical and natural resources, that national park status should be pursued, and that all 570 acres remain in public ownership and under the management of a public entity dedicated to its stewardship as a grand public place for the American people. For more information on the Hampton Citizens Initiative, go to 12/18/08 and 12/21/08 links on our Whats New web page. As of this writing, the initiative has been filed with City of Hampton officials in accordance with the City Charter, and hopefully public hearings will be held soon before City Council on considering its adoption.
