What do giraffes eat?
“Hi I’m Gary Wilson at America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College. Giraffes of course are the tallest animals living on land. The neck gives them access to the leaves high up in the trees that no other animals can get to. Even elephants sometimes will reach way up with their trunk, but a giraffe can reach farther than an elephant can. So they will pluck the leaves from trees, and they will even eat things like acacia, which have thorns on them. Giraffes have a tongue that is eighteen inches long, and that allows them to reach out and grab these leaves and shoots on the branches that no other animals can reach. Giraffes are herbivores, meaning they eat only plant material, and so they spend much of their day browsing. We say some animals, some herbivores are grazers, and some are browsers. Grazers feed on grass like a zebra does.
